My Philosophy
At a time when medicine is increasingly managed by corporations and institutions, I have chosen to practice medicine the way I was trained, with the understanding that compassion, expertise, and quality are the cornerstones of healthcare. My mentor in residency, Michael Goldberg called himself an orthopaedist and not an orthopaedic surgeon. That title still resonates with me as I think of myself as an expert in anatomy, physiology, and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Surgery is only one of the tools I use to treat patients. Indeed more than 90% of my patients are treated without surgery.
I understand that the people who seek treatment are in pain and are looking for guidance. Rather than utilize physician extenders such as physician assistants or nurse practitioners I personally examine each patient and put a great emphasis on correct diagnosis and insist on the right tests. In most circumstances, we will offer appointments for emergencies within 72 hours. I review every x-ray and MRI, put on each cast, give each injection and put in each stitch in my practice. Surgery is only suggested after all other options have been exhausted. Since medicine is an evolving science and art, it may not have all of the answers. I believe in alternative approaches and keep an open mind.
